The Hydro in our name means "water," which we use throughout the entire process of sharpening your shears. During our honing process, your shears are continuously cooled to prevent the re-tempering of the cutting edge. If your shears are sharpened without the aid of water, (which acts as as lubricant and a coolant to the metal) it degrades the initial tempering of your blades, adversely affecting your shears’ ability to hold their cutting edge.
Honing is the process of polishing a shear to a sharpened edge. This method of sharpening takes much longer than using coarse grinding wheels, but it offers immeasurable benefits. By using the finest polishing compounds when sharpening, we remove metal very slowly. As a result, your shears are honed to a point that restores the razor-sharp edge without removing excessive amounts of the blade. Other sharpening methods can remove four to five times the amount of metal per sharpening, drastically reducing the life of your shears.
We are not an assembly line sharpening service.
Because not all shears are sharpened at the same angle, our sharpening process pays special attention to the detail of the cutting edge and balance of your particular scissor. There are hundreds of different blade designs, and each blade's sharpening must be consistent with the angle of the shears design. Each shear is individually disassembled, cleaned, balanced and then hand honed to the finest possible edge that the quality of the shear will allow.
